Quote of the week by Agnes Jongerius, on EU employment guidelines

“We will only get out of the COVID-19 crisis in a fair way by ensuring inequalities do not grow even more. Especially in these tough times, member states need to be able to invest in their health care systems, and the EU's fiscal rules must not become an unsurmountable barrier for this. To make sure money ends up where people need it, and not in the pockets of some wealthy investors, multinationals registered in tax havens must be banned from receiving EU funds.”

Last week:

Fighting for fair employment in the post-COVID economy, passengers’ rights and using education as a tool to avoid social exclusion were just a few of the items on the S&D Group’s agenda this past week.

What’s coming up

Next week, Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament will be preparing for the upcoming remote plenary session. The European Recovery Plan, the debate on the previous Summit of the European Council, and on the upcoming one, as well as the German Presidency of the Council of the EU will be on the agenda.

Also, next plenary we’ll know who’s who in the future special and sub-committees. The decision has already been taken on the establishment of special committees on foreign interference in electoral processes and disinformation, on artificial intelligence and on the fight against cancer. These will carry their activities for one year. More importantly, at the strong demand of the S&D Group, the Parliament has also created a permanent sub-committee on taxes.

On Wednesday, we will monitor and react on the European Commission’s new proposal on the Youth Guarantee and the updated Skills Agenda for Europe.

Also on Wednesday, S&D members will hold their remote group meeting in the morning.

You can keep up-to-date on all S&D initiatives and reactions on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
