Following a joint hearing yesterday in the European Parliament of Mariya Gabriel, Commissioner-designate for digital economy and society, the S&D Group are satisfied that she understands the portfolio well and will support her appointment.

Dan Nica MEP, S&D Group spokesperson for industry, research and energy, said:

“Mariya Gabriel has shown a good grasp of the major files and we are happy to support her candidacy.

“It has taken a long time to replace the previous Commissioner and it is important to now get to work on creating a fully-fledged digital union. We will push the new Commissioner to put inclusivity at the heart of the EU’s digital strategy. We need to ensure affordable connectivity for all Europeans as well as a reliable and trusted infrastructure, so everyone can benefit from digitalisation.”

Silvia Costa MEP, S&D Group spokesperson for culture and education, added:

“The digital revolution is already changing every part of our lives from how we work to how we spend our free time. We wanted to hear from the Commissioner-designate how she will help foster the educational and social dimension of the digital strategy. In particular how the EU can help citizens to gain the digital skills and media literacy they need to succeed in the digital world; as well as creating digital infrastructure for schools and universities, promoting an inclusive e-citizenship and overcoming the digital divide. We also pushed the Commissioner to explain how she see will to ensure that European culture and creative content can be promoted in the coming years.

“We are satisfied with her performance today but now need to see how she turns her words into actions.”
