The S&D Group secretariat (central administration) is based in the European Parliament in the heart of Brussels.  Our 250 staff of multicultural backgrounds, not only from all the 27 member states but also much further afield, are committed to providing dedicated support for the work of the members and for the overall functioning of the S&D Group.

The secretariat has three key roles:

  • to offer political advice, information and research to support political decision-making
  • to assist in policy development and negotiation
  • to provide logistical support and technical assistance for Group activities
DEPARTMENT: EXTERNAL ACTION

The department for external action brings together all staff responsible for the five European Parliament committees for external relations:

  • foreign affairs
  • security and defence
  • human rights
  • trade
  • development

Apart from parliamentary support, the department publishes policy papers and organises debates with NGOs, specialists and the wider public in order to influence policies regarding the Middle East, trade negotiations (TTIP), relations with Africa and other topics.

In order to set up world-wide debates on international solidarity and the globalisation process, the S&D Group founded, together with friendly organisations, the Global Progressive Forum; its staff is also to be found in the department.
