Our mission, vision and values

The S&D Group is the leading centre-left political group in the European Parliament and the second largest. The S&D Group stands for an inclusive European society based on principles like:

Freedom

Our MEPs are committed to fighting for social justice, jobs and growth, consumer rights, sustainable development, financial market reform and human rights to create a stronger and more democratic Europe and a better future for everyone.

In today's times of crisis, the S&D Group's priority is to fight unemployment and ensure that our societies and markets become fairer. We want to give people back trust in the EU and hope for their future. These principles inspire our daily work, in the European Parliament and beyond.

The S&D Group's Bureau co-ordinates its political activity. It is made up of the president, nine vice-presidents and the treasurer. Our Bureau was elected on 26 June 2024.

Meet our MEPs

The S&D Group is the second largest political group in the European Parliament and our MEPs work in all parliamentary committees and interparliamentary delegations.

The S&D Group secretariat (central administration) is based in the European Parliament in the heart of Brussels.  Our 250 staff of multicultural backgrounds, not only from all the 27 member states but also much further afield, are committed to providing dedicated support for the work of the members and for the overall functioning of the S&D Group.

The secretariat has three key roles:

  • to offer political advice, information and research to support political decision-making
  • to assist in policy development and negotiation
  • to provide logistical support and technical assistance for Group activities

The S&Ds work closely with sister organisations involved with the EU institutions, with our ultimate joint goal being to create a stronger and more democratic Europe and build a better future for everyone.

The S&D Group unites diverse national parties, Commissioners, and national parliaments across Europe, forging a cohesive platform to champion progressive policies and values on both the European and national levels.
