Socialists and Democrats oppose ISDS in TTIP

At their meeting in Brussels today, Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament restated their position – officially adopted last March – to exclude Investor-State Dispute Settlements (ISDS) in the EU-US trade and investment partnership (TTIP) being negotiated.

The S&D spokesperson on trade David Martin MEP said:

"The S&D Group will not accept any kind of private arbitration. ISDS is definitely not the way forward. Both the United States and the European Union have reliable national courts which should be the regular procedure to solve any dispute.

“The right of governments to regulate in the public interest must be unambiguous, and the principle of equal rights between national and foreign investors must be safeguarded.

"The report to be voted on by the Parliament next week outlines our priorities and demands for any final TTIP agreement. And the S&D Group is making clear we want no ISDS in TTIP."
