S&Ds welcome agreement on Libyan dialogue process

Concerning the Libyan dialogue process for the political settlement, the Socialist and Democrats Group in the European Parliament welcomes the agreement reached yesterday in Skhirat, Morocco.

S&D Group president Gianni Pittella stated:

"After months of negotiations this agreement is a crucial first step to build a democratic civil state through national consensus and address the needs and aspirations of the Libyan people. We expect this agreement be a fully inclusive consensus, as this is the only way to ensure the democratic rights of the Libyan people.

"I congratulate the UNSG Special Representative, Bernardino Léon, for his efforts to bring parties towards a deal. It is extremely important to precede now to the implementation of this agreement in good faith and to provide the tools needed to face the challenges for a democratic Libya and the fight against radicalisation and terrorism."

S&D MEP and vice-president for foreign affairs Victor Boştinaru said:

"The framework for a peace deal signed in Morocco gives hopes to the entire region – which is facing increasing destabilisation and terrorism - and to the EU, but it gives hopes first and foremost to the Libyan people. They have been confronted with a confused and worrying situation for too long. I welcome the positive attitude of almost all parties in working towards this agreement, and of course I thank Bernardino Léon for all the work done. But let's not take this as a final point, the implementation of this agreement will be as difficult, and all parties need to be fully committed. The future of Libya is in their hands. Libya needs stability and security, and as expressed many times by high representative Federica Mogherini, the EU is ready to offer its full support once the preconditions have been put in place by Libyans in their country."
