The S&D Group condemns the failed coup and violence against democracy in Turkey and regrets all casualties.
Following the violence overnight, the S&D Group calls on the Turkish government to reflect on how far democracy has been undermined in the country.
Gianni Pittella, president of Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament, said:
“Any coup attempt against democracy must be condemned. In the name of democracy no one can carry out anti-democratic actions like firing at parliament and shooting at civilians. The change of power should ultimately only take place through democratic elections.
“It must be clear, however, that our severe judgement of President Erdogan - who is responsible for anti-democratic tendencies in Turkey against political opponents, freedom of the media and human rights - remains unchanged.
“The S&D Group now invites the Turkish government both to improve the democratic situation in the country and to return to the peace process with the Kurds instead of exploiting this unfortunate violence overnight to further deteriorate the rule of law.
“EU relations with Turkey must be based on respect for fundamental rights and the full stabilisation of the political and democratic situation.”
