“The Commission is right to act against Google”, say S&D Euro MPs

Today, the European Commission has filed a complaint against Google for abuse of dominant position by favouring its own comparison shopping products. The Commission has also decided to investigate Google’s conduct regarding its mobile operating system, Android.

S&D Group spokeswoman responsible of the internal market Evelyne Gebhardt said:

"The Commission is right to act against Google. Google is not above the law and should not be able to ignore the European anti-trust rules. Europe is not the wild west.

"By enforcing these rules, the European Commission has shown that it has the interest of European competitors and start-ups at heart.

"As guardian of the treaty, the European Commission must ensure that the same existing rules are applied to all operators in order to create a level playing field. Google must provide unbiased factual information to its users."

S&D Group vice-president responsible for the digital agenda Jörg Leichtfried added:

"Excessive market concentration or abuse of dominant position has to be prevented in the interest of the consumer.

"The Socialists and Democrats will strive to ensure that digital technologies benefit us all in building a fairer, more inclusive society, where individual rights are protected and where consumers and operators are treated equally."
