S&Ds encourage Moldova to continue with reforms to strengthen democracy following elections

The Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament welcome the peaceful elections in Moldova and call on the future coalition government to put citizens first and strengthen democratic dialogue.

Knut Fleckenstein, S&D spokesperson on foreign policy, said:

"The provisional results of Moldova's parliamentary elections highlight the plurality of the country's political system. So far, no party is far ahead of the others. I am confident that it will be possible to build a strong pro-European coalition that will continue to implement the necessary reforms

Tanja Fajon, the S&D spokesperson on the Republic of Moldova said:

“I am happy that yesterday's elections in Moldova were conducted peacefully and conformed to democratic standards, although the deregistration of one party shortly before elections raises some questions which should be addressed.

The people of the Republic of Moldova have spoken in favour of democracy and further EU integration. I expect the new government – despite the current circumstances – to be formed swiftly and hope that it will continue on its European path.

“The new coalition will have to face great challenges and it can only succeed by putting the needs of its citizens first. More efforts should be invested in the reform programme and the full implementation of the association agreement with the EU. In addition, this new momentum should be seized in order to continue the negotiations on the settlement of the Transnistrian issue.”
