S&Ds congratulate the Colombian people on the peace agreement

The Socialists and Democrats welcome the peace commitment announced by the Colombian president Juan Manuel Santos and leaders from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) yesterday in Havana. The deal foresees the creation of tribunals and a reconciliation commission, and it will be the basis for a final agreement expected in six months.

S&D president Gianni Pittella said:

"We are glad that after 50 years, the longest-standing conflict in Latin America comes to an end. We commend the courage and perseverance of the Colombian people who have shown their determination to live in peace, as well as the facilitation provided by Cuba and Norway.

"Peace is the common path and justice is the key word for peace."

Ramón Jáuregui, president of the EU-Latin America Parliamentary Assembly (Eurolat), said:

"I would also like to value the decision of those who now abandon violence and embrace democracy. History proves that votes always prevail over weapons. I send my best wishes to the Colombian people. Once peace is achieved, the enormous task of re-building coexistence begins.  I sincerely hope the Colombian people will do so in a spirit of tolerance, always remembering the victims and never forgetting the truth of what happened".
