Group President Iratxe García, on the external Group meeting in Madrid:

"On the occasion of the Spanish presidency of the Council of the EU, we are holding a meeting of the Group of Socialists and Democrats in Madrid. The cooperation between our Group and progressive governments in Europe has been a success throughout the EU legislature, and has allowed us to carry out an agenda based on solidarity to initiate major reforms, such as the ecological and digital transition, as well as tackle the Covid-19 pandemic and the economic and social consequences of the war against Ukraine.”

Upcoming events:

S&D external group week Madrid 2023

From 25 to 28 September, our Group will hold a series of meetings and events in Madrid. Under the slogan “Adelante!”, we will be discussing how to achieve a social Europe that works for everyone.

The S&Ds will address a wide range of topics with their counterparts in Madrid, ranging from social rights and asylum, to economic governance and nature restoration. S&D Group members will hold debates with representatives of trade unions, civil society and NGOs.

Acting President of Spain, Pedro Sánchez Pérez-Castejón, will take part in the Group meeting on Thursday 28 September at 10:00, alongside S&D president Iratxe García Pérez. The session will be webstreamed on the S&D website, YouTube channel and by satellite.

On Wednesday, 27 September, we will visit San Fernando de Henares where more than 600 homes have been affected by the underground metro construction works.
Our open event “¡Adelante! Our Social Europe that Works for All” will take place on Wednesday, 27 September, from 19:30 to 21:30, in Sala Equis. The debate will be web streamed and open to the public and the media.

Upcoming activities:

Our MEPs are also preparing the first Plenary session in October.
We’ll be keeping a close eye on the hearing for a new EU commissioner candidate aiming to take up an important portfolio in the College. Therefore, on Monday, 2 October, our members will be grilling Wopke Hoekstra, Commissioner-designate for Climate Action. The next day we will hear from Maros Šefčovič, Executive Vice-President for the European Green Deal.

We will also continue keeping an eye on the Polish visa corruption scandal, demanding a full investigation.

Another highlight for our Group for the October I plenary session is the much-needed and long-awaited revision of the Multiannual Financial Framework until 2027 where our Margarida Marques is one of two co-authors of the report in the Committee on budgets.
