S&D Group welcomes the agreement on the Special Prosecutor in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia

The S&D Group has welcomed the agreement on the Special Prosecutor who will be dealing with crimes related to and arising from the content of illegally intercepted communication in the Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. They view it as an important element of the 15 July Skopje agreement facilitated by Commissioner Hahn and three MEPs.

Said Richard Howitt, S&D Group Foreign Affairs Coordinator and one of the three MEP-s who facilitated the agreement on 15 July:

I congratulate the Macedonian parties for reaching an agreement. The appointment of the prosecutor represents a significant step toward establishing accountability in the country. MEPs remain committed to helping the country to implement the agreement and move forward on its path to full integration into Euro-Atlantic institutions as a democratic, prosperous and multi-ethnic society where the rule of law is respected.

S&D vice-chair responsible for foreign affairs, Knut Fleckenstein, said:

Following the vote in the Assembly yesterday, S&D Group reiterates the call for an urgent and independent investigation of the wrongdoings. We also invite the parties to show the same commitment in relation to the implementation of the other elements of the political agreement and the urgent reform priorities. S&D Group is especially pleased to see that the Social Democratic Union of Macedonia (SDSM) has already returned to Parliament on 1 September 2015.
