Progressives pledge to enhance co-operation between EU and Latin America

The standing committees of EuroLat met in Panama from 16 to 19 March 2015 to discuss political, social, environmental and economic issues related to the EU-Latin America relations.

Welcoming the positive outcome of the meeting, Portuguese socialist MEP Carlos Zorrinho, co-ordinator of the S&D delegation, said:

“These three days of debates were intense but extremely fruitful. It was indeed possible to converge in a common position in the defence of the principles of freedom, democracy and sustainable development. The progressive forces from the EU and Latin America share the same vision of globalisation that puts people in the forefront and helps protect the planet.”

S&D vice-president Jörg Liechtfried MEP, newly elected co-chairman of the EU-Latin America's Civil Society Forum, added:

”The exchange of views with representatives of civil society has outlined once again the need for politicians to reach out to our people from both sides of the Atlantic, in order to advance the social and political agenda promoting fundamental rights and freedoms.”

Inmaculada Rodríguez-Piñero MEP and member of the EuroLat committee on economic affairs, financial and trade also stressed:

"There is a need to closely work together to enhance the economic and trade relations of both sides, based on our shared common values and principles.

"Our co-operation is aimed at citizens, consumers and SMEs.  We want to promote sustainable development, equal opportunities, empowerment and gender equality," Rodríguez-Piñero concluded.
