Pittella on the Coup d'état in Burkina Faso: "Electoral process must not be compromised"

The President of the Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament, Gianni Pittella, has condemned the military coup in Burkina Faso in which the transitional President was deposed and the government dissolved.

Mr Pittella said:

"We condemn in the strongest terms the coup in Burkina Faso and we invite the High Representative Federica Mogherini and the rest of the international community to support the process of democratic transition and the electoral calendar. Presidential and legislative elections are running as planned for October 11."

"Burkina Faso is at a pivotal moment in its democratic history, especially with a promising young population, and the upcoming elections are the result of this transition and we must work to make sure they succeed. Peace and security are paramount and the armed forces must respect the interests of the country and allow the electoral process to be carried out without intervening. "
