S&Ds MEPs Giuseppina Picierno and Ionel-Sorin Moisa took part to the 18th EU-Mexico Joint Parliamentary Committee, in Mexico DF from the 18 to 20 February 2015.

The main objective of the meeting was to improve projects and cooperation on human rights, climate change and the post-2015 development framework. The modernisation of the Global Agreement between the EU and Mexico was also on the agenda.

At the heart of the discussions was the fight against organised crime and corruption - especially in light of the case of the 43 disappeared students in Iguala. The EP Delegation met with the Minister of Interior, the President of the Investigative Commission, civil society as well as the parents of the students.

Giuseppina Picierno, 1st vice-president of the Delegation said:

"The Iguala case is not an isolated case. Fighting organised crime and corruption is the responsibility of each government but it is a transnational problem that requires a transnational solution. We will continue to raise this specific case as well as the others with the Mexican authorities and work together to find a lasting solution to a problem that the EU has decisively addressed within its territory. We owe it to all Mexican and European citizens."

Ionel-Sorin Moisa, EP standing rapporteur on trade with Mexico added:

"Mexico is a strategic partner for the EU given its history, geographical position and booming economy. Enhanced trade based on more and better market access and regulatory cooperation is beneficial for both parties and can help promote a more just society, human rights and security. This is the approach I will continue to push in the modernisation of our global agreement with this major economy. Modernising the free trade agreement with Mexico - negotiated in the mid '90s - will nicely complete our North American trade strategy, alongside the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) and the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP)."
