Enrique Guerrero appointed new president of the Global Progressive Forum: “Trump and Le Pen are salt on people’s wounds”

Enrique Guerrero Salom S&D MEP (Spain) is the new president of the Global Progressive Forum (GPF), an international network promoted by the Party of the European Socialists and the Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament to connect progressive forces from around the world and develop a global progressive agenda.

The new GPF president, S&D MEP Enrique Guerrero Salom said:

“The current surge of xenophobic and protectionist forces is the dramatic consequence of the failure of the liberal promises on globalisation. Ages of unregulated globalisation have produced rising inequality, climate change, international instability and millions of refugees. Trump, Le Pen and those alike, are salt on people’s wounds who are adding misery to an already dramatic situation.

“If we want to avoid this, worldwide progressive forces need to again put globalisation on the agenda and engage with social movements and people calling for radical reforms and change.”

Created in 2003, the GPF is active in all continents promoting worldwide campaigns and commitments to action on human rights, social justice, sustainable growth and social progress.

Guerrero takes over from Gianni Pittella, president of the Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament and, together with MEP Sergei Stanishev, president of the European Socialists, will lead the GPF.

A former close aide to prime minister Felipe González and José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, Enrique Guerrero is a professor of Political Science and Administration at the Universidad Complutense of Madrid and a member of the European parliament since 2009.
