Democratic principles and values in Albania must be fully respected, say S&Ds.

The S&D Group in the European Parliament strongly condemns the violence used by the Albanian conservative opposition yesterday in Tirana, during an anti-government demonstration and call for the respect of the democratic principles and values.

S&D vice-chair for foreign affairs, neighbourhood policy and enlargement, Knut Fleckenstein MEP, said:

"A few weeks ago, when I visited Tirana, I was cautiously optimistic that the political forces in Albania would reach an understanding that would allow the European integration process to proceed uninterrupted. After the violent protests of yesterday, which – regrettably – were openly supported by the leader of the opposition, I am obliged to stress the need for caution and call for a more responsible attitude. According to the latest information I received, the decriminalisation law was about to be adopted; it is therefore hard to understand what has triggered the protests. And even in cases where protest is legitimate, the organisers should make every effort to avoid violence. We strongly condemn violence and call for normal political behaviour, in line with European standards and in the interests of the nation as a whole."
