Pittella: Venice Commission has spoken. Polish government must implement recommendations in full

Following the release of the Venice Commission's damning opinion on the changes to the Constitutional Court in Poland and the previous ruling by the court that the changes are unconstitutional, S&D Group President Gianni Pittella has called for the Polish government to implement the recommendations in full.

President Gianni Pittella said:

"What is happening in Poland is deeply concerning. The Venice Commission has spoken loud and clear and the Polish government must now act and implement their recommendations. The previous ruling by the Constitutional Court that these changes are unconstitutional is a binding decision and it must be respected as such.

“Despite our constant willingness to keep a constructive dialogue with the Polish government, we cannot remain silent and not express our strong concern towards the unfolding of a constitutional and political crisis in Warsaw.

"Poland is an essential part of the European Union. The country's economic success in the last 30 years has been underpinned by strong democratic institutions and respect for the rule of law. Hence, we urge the Polish government not to interpret nor put into question the judgments of the highest judicial authority in the country.

“The S&D fully supports the Commission in its task of monitoring under the Rule of Law framework mechanism and the very right initiative of the first Vice President of the Commission, Frans Timmermans”.
