Today the transport coordinators of all political groups gave the green light to Violeta Bulc becoming commissioner for this policy area. Socialists and Democrats acknowledged that she performed well at her hearing yesterday, considering how little time she had to prepare for it. They said that they expect the transport commissioner to follow the line and vision outlined by Maroš Šefčovič, who will now become Commission vice-president whose responsibilities will include transport issues.

S&D spokesperson on transport, MEP Ismail Ertug, said:

“We expect Violeta Bulc to go ahead with the overall plan of the Commission to modernise infrastructures and invest part of the €300 billion in the transport sector in order to promote sustainable growth, innovation and smart job creation.

“As we clearly stated before giving our support, she must keep Šefčovič's commitment to promote a social package for the transport sector. There can be no liberalisation of the road freight market if safe working conditions and the social rights of drivers are not assured at the same pace."
