Ahead of the State of the Union debate in the plenary session next week, the chair of the Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, Iratxe García, along with S&D Group Parliamentary Secretary, Elisabetta Gualmini, has sent a letter to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stating the Group's priorities for the coming months.

Iratxe García said:

“The support of the S&D Group to Ursula von der Leyen has always been conditional to a series of progressive policies that we wanted to see in the Commission working programme. We have less than one year to finalise and consolidate crucial reforms such as the Green Deal, the economic governance to leave austerity behind, measures to address the rising cost of living, to reinforce the social pillar, to finally adopt the migration pact and to move forward with enlargement.

“We expect to hear a real and vocal commitment from the Commission President to these policies when she addresses the European Parliament next week. This is the message that we wanted to send with the letter, and which I will also insist upon tomorrow when Commission President von der Leyen attends the Conference of Presidents.”
