Quote of the week by S&D president Udo Bullmann:

"Instead of wasting another two weeks, or even two months, asking Parliament the same question – why not put it back to the British people? We have always viewed Brexit as historic mistake and would welcome the UK to change its mind. If May is not prepared to do this, she must work closely with the Labour Party for a closer EU-UK relationship that can find a majority and break the current deadlock."

Upcoming activities

Busy days ahead for our members, as we prepare for two Plenary sessions this month! Meanwhile, back in Brussels, committee work and events are in full swing. Check out some of the highlights below.

Our Group president, Udo Bullmann, will be on mission in Athens at the beginning of next week, to present the Progressive Society policy report on Sustainable Equality. The report was put together by a group of independent experts under the lead of former Greek minister of Labour and the Economy Louka Katseli and former PES-President and Prime Minister of Denmark Poul Nyrup Rasmussen. It includes a broad set of concrete proposals to change the course of the European Union towards a truly fair economic, social and environmental model that will achieve decent living conditions for the many, not just the few, while respecting the natural boundaries of our planet. The event in Athens is co-organised with the Athens office of Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung and the Athens Development & Governance Institute (A.D.G.I-INERPOST).

On Monday it’s time to vote on time in the committee on transport. Led by our own Marita Ulvskog, members will cast their votes on the proposal on whether or not to put an end to the bi-yearly saga of daylight savings.

Our MEP Paul Tang will finalise, on Wednesday, the negotiations with the Council on sustainable investments and sustainability risks. Our aim? To include environmental, social and governance (ESG) considerations in the decision-making process of investors and asset managers. This is an essential part of the progressive efforts to connect finance with the EU’s sustainable development agenda.

From 5-8 March, we’re looking forward to hosting another edition of the Youth for Gender Equality Forum. 50 young citizens will join us in Brussels under the common theme
Step it up for Gender Equality in a Progressive Society. This is an interactive and inspiring initiative to promote dialogue, exchange, learning and networking for young people engaged in promoting gender equality in their daily lives. The programme focuses on what we stand for in terms of gender equality and sustainable equality, what we have achieved so far and how we will to continue our fight for a progressive society in the future.
The dialogue doesn't stop here. It goes on, on social media, with the hashtag #All4Equality.

And save the date! On March 15, we’re bringing our #EuropeTogether debate to Leipzig, Germany! Check out the full programme and guest speakers here!
