S&Ds: A government of national accord is needed in Libya

Following this afternoon’s discussion in the European Parliament on Libya, the chairman of the Maghreb delegation Pier Antonio Panzeri said:

"The S&D Group expresses its great concern at the deteriorating situation in Libya. We urge all the parties involved to put pressure on Libyans, in order to find a political agreement in a spirit of compromise by the 20th of October. Although this is a difficult situation, those who block this agreement will bear huge responsibility. Given the delicate context of the situation in Libya, it may be astute to discuss the possible replacement of the UN negotiator Bernardino León. Only a Government of national accord would be able to unite Libya and prevent the rise of further major problems, not only in the region but also in Europe."

Richard Howitt MEP, S&D Group's foreign affairs coordinator said:

"We want to reaffirm in the strongest way that there is no military or unilateral solution to the conflict in Libya. It is extremely important for the Libyans to agree on the political agreement as it stands. The S&D Group is well aware that no agreement is perfect, but this document will help the Libyan people to move beyond the chaos and it will contribute to the creation of a stable and democratic state with a clear legal framework."
