Quote of the week from Delara Burkhardt, S&D negotiator on the deforestation law:
“We managed to put an end to the embarrassing spectacle orchestrated by the EPP Group and the stalemate they caused for businesses. From the start, we, Social Democrats, proposed a solution that is now reflected in the final outcomes; namely to modestly postpone the Deforestation Regulation by one year and to demand a commitment from the European Commission on further support measures for businesses. This will give companies sufficient additional time and assistance to prepare for the implementation of the regulation.”

From 9 to 15 December, the annual EP Gender Equality Week takes place. This year, the focus is on Women in the Digital World: Safety and Empowerment. A key moment will be the presentation of the 2024 Gender Equality Index – a fundamental tool to highlight where member states stand on their path to gender equality – by EIGE, the European Institute for Gender Equality.
Launched in 2020 by S&D member Evelyn Regner, this year’s Gender Equality Week will feature, among others, our Lina Gálvez Muñoz, chair of the EP FEMM committee, and former Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero.

Events:
Join us on 17 December for a debate with peace activists and the 2024 Sakharov Prize finalists, Women Wage Peace (Israel) and Women of the Sun (Palestine). Since 2014, both NGOs have been marching together, requesting political leaders to negotiate long-lasting peace, and highlighting the transformative role women and mothers can have in this regard. Register here no later than 12 December.
At this event, co-organised with Renew, the two NGOs will be joined in discussion by four other peace activists, of both Israeli and Palestinian origin, who have chosen not to give up the fight for peace.
