Quote of the week by president Iratxe García on her re-election as S&D Group leader:

“Above all, social democracy is a belief in change. The present and the future of our society can and must be fairer, more prosperous and more sustainable. Let us act with courage, enthusiasm and vision. Let us be proud of our achievements and let us show the solidarity necessary to progress in building a fairer Union.”

Late last night, EU heads of states and governments gave their green light for the three candidates to lead the European institutions. A seasoned politician and strong leader, António Costa has been appointed as future president of the EU Council.

“The appointment of António Costa to lead the European Council is great news for the European Union. Our Union gains a great politician, a committed European and an exemplary socialist leader. He is certainly the right person for this very demanding role,” our president Iratxe García stated.

On 15 July, the S&D Group is heading to Strasbourg for the first Plenary session of the new mandate. Follow us, as we’ll be electing the president of the European Parliament for the next 2.5 years, as well as the vice-presidents and quaestors of the institution.
