S&D Group MEPs today called for improving the life of Roma people to be made a standing priority of the European Council. The call came during an event organised by the Slovak Presidency on promoting the role and opportunities of young Roma people. S&D MEPs Soraya Post, Damian Draghici, and Péter Niedermüller took part in the event.

S&D spokesperson for Roma affairs Soraya Post MEP said:

“We welcome that the Slovak Presidency has put the issue of empowering Roma youth on its agenda and that they are working to accelerate the process of Roma integration. However, for us it is essential that the Roma issue be kept on the agenda permanently as a standing priority of the Council including a clear strategy for tackling anti-gypsyism, which is at the heart of many of the severe problems Roma people face. There is a need for a Truth and Reconciliation Commission in the European Union. This is vital if we are serious about making meaningful change to the lives or Roma people."

S&D MEP Damian Draghici added:

“Roma identity and Roma youth empowerment means more strength, more confidence and more opportunities to learn about Roma history, social and cultural diversity. We need to make clear to all what we can do. We need to learn to help each other not just to criticise each other. We need to assume responsibilities at a local, national and international level.

“Access to education must be the rule not the exception for young Roma people. We need to show more success stories of young Roma people to change the perceptions of our community.”

S&D Group bureau member, Péter Niedermüller MEP, said:

“Young Roma face an uphill struggle across the EU.  Many face severe poverty, profound social exclusion and often lack access to quality education. All of these aspects affect their employment opportunities and their ability to develop their potential and their futures. Although differences exist between member states, more should be done at an EU level to fight anti-gypsyism and ensure equal rights are guaranteed for all Roma. This week’s event is an important initiative but one-off events are not enough, we need this issue to be at the heart of the EU’s work.”
