The European Socialists will gather in Madrid, as of Thursday, for the PES Congress that will officially endorse the progressive candidate to chair the next European Commission, Frans Timmermans and the electoral Manifesto. A delegation of the S&D Group will also attend.

S&D leader Udo Bullmann said:

“We must change the course of the EU in the next term from 2019 to 2024. Based on our work and achievements in the Parliament over the last five years, we want a new governance built on a new Sustainable Development Pact.

“Madrid is the best place to discuss this roadmap. The Spanish government led by Pedro Sánchez reflects our vision: on the one hand, it includes true gender equality, and on the other hand, it has adopted a horizontal approach to all policies in order to ensure social, economic and environmental sustainability.

“Sánchez is showing that efficiency and coherence are possible if we want to re-empower people, re-shape capitalism and re-build social justice; and it should also be like that at the European level.”

Events:

On Thursday, Udo Bullmann will present the report of the Independent Commission of Sustainable Equality in a discussion organised by Fundación Alternativas on “A progressive vision for the future of Europe” along with the chair of the Spanish S&D delegation Iratxe García Pérez, and then they will also meet with young Europeans living in Madrid to hear their concerns and hopes for the next European elections.

On Friday, the Group will present the findings of its work on the Sustainable Development Goals and the 2030 Agenda with the Spanish High Commissioner for the 2030 Agenda Cristina Gallach, and other experts and practitioners. In the evening, Udo Bullmann will participate in the PES leaders’ dinner attended and co-chaired by the Spanish prime minister Pedro Sánchez.

On Saturday morning, the S&D Bureau will meet and exchange views with the Spanish minister for the Ecological Transition Teresa Ribera.
