Following the visit of Italian president Sergio Mattarella, to the European Parliament today, the leader of the S&D Group, Gianni Pittella, stated:
"Libya and immigration must be placed at the forefront of Europe’s political action. President Mattarella has shown great political acumen and forward-looking vision in strongly reaffirming the need for Europe as a whole to focus on the issues of immigration and Libya.
"These dossiers are not and should not be a priority just for Italy. By stressing the need to revitalise the integration process, President Mattarella has gone straight to the heart of the issue: we need a major political role for the European Union."
