Pittella on Iran: Historic agreement which highlights the importance of the EU's role on the international scene

Following the announcement of an agreement reached by the EU3+3 and Iran on the key parameters of a nuclear agreement, which will significantly constrain Iran's nuclear program and subject it to inspections in exchange for the lifting of the nuclear-related sanctions, the president of the Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament, Gianni Pittella, stated:

"An historic agreement on Iran's nuclear program has been reached in Lausanne, which will not only potentially benefit Europe, but bring stability to the entire Middle East region.

"The whole S&D Group salutes the role played by the EU's High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy Federica Mogherini in achieving this major diplomatic success, demonstrating the effectiveness and importance of a genuine European role on the international scene.

"We hope this framework agreement will be converted into a final, comprehensive nuclear agreement with Iran before the mutually agreed deadline of late June. It is an agreement which will hopefully pave the way for Iran's full reintegration to the international community".

S&D MEP and vice-president for foreign affairs Victor Boştinaru said:

Yesterday, after years of endless negotiations, and thanks to the leadership and vision of EU High Representative Mogerini and President Obama, we reached the outline of what will be an historic agreement with Iran. It's a strong and positive signal that the negotiators of the deal were able to set aside decades of distrust in order to come to this agreement.

The deal announced yesterday contains concessions on both sides, but there is still a long way to go until the deal is finalised, prior to the June 30th deadline. I trust we can move forward from here, with the goodwill of Iran and with our continued commitment to peace and security.
