Pittella: “Greek people rewarded Tsipras's job. Now a government with all progressive forces”

European Socialists and Democrats take note of the results of the Greek general election, underlining the need for a strong pro-European progressive coalition government, which can combine efforts for sustainable development, employment and social justice.

Commenting on the result of this election, Gianni Pittella, President of the S&D Group in the European Parliament, said:

“Greek people decided to reward Tsipras's political commitment. We take note of today's general election in Greece, which is a victory for democracy and for the Greek pro-European progressive forces and a clear defeat for the right.”

“We call on Alexis Tsipras, the leader of the victorious party, to undertake the necessary steps, in cooperation with our sister parties -TO POTAMI and PASOK/DIMA - to form a strong four year progressive government. The result of TO POTAMI and PASOK/DIMA allows the possibility for  strong government and real change.”

“The new Tsipras government must break with the old corrupt political system and advance seriously in the fight against tax evasion, tax avoidance, bureaucracy and corruption. It must also invest in education and building a functioning welfare and health system.”

“We re-stress the need for a solution to the unsustainable levels of Greek debt. Without reduction of the country's debt there is no hope for any recovery or growth. Greece's partners and creditors should accept the need for debt restructuring or haircut, so that the country can invest in building a healthy economy.”

“We call on the European Union and its Member States to act together and co-operate with the new government, showing practical solidarity in its efforts for recovery, jobs and social justice. With the necessary political will in the country and the EU, the new Tsipras government can and will overcome the crisis.”
