Speaking after the results of the UK election, S&D Group president Gianni Pittella said:
“We are proud of a great campaign and result for UK Labour. This is a disaster for Theresa May. She called this election to strengthen her position and she has ended up with a hung parliament. It was a huge gamble and it has backfired spectacularly. UK citizens have clearly rejected her vision of the UK and of Brexit and she should resign - she has no credibility in her own country or in Europe now.
“On the other hand Jeremy Corbyn and his party ran a strong and positive campaign that has clearly energised British democracy. It managed to mobilise both traditional voters and particularly young people. This result shows to Social Democratic parties across the EU that we have a bright future when we are distinctive and focus on our values and the fight against inequality. We warmly congratulate Jeremy and the Labour Party for this political success.
“We now need a serious discussion with the UK about its future relationship with the EU. We have already wasted enough time because of Theresa May’s erratic behaviour. Now it is time for negotiations to start. Our position has not changed, we want a positive relationship but you cannot enjoy the same rights and benefits outside the EU that you do as a member.”
