Gianni Pittella – Our partnership with Fatah to stop the violence and bring peace for Palestine and Israel

The president of the Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament, Gianni Pittella, signed a partnership agreement with Fatah this morning. He met with Nabil Shaath, senior Palestinian negotiator and Fatah's commissioner for international relations, to set out commitments to strengthen co-operation with the Palestinian sister party. Fatah is the party of peace in Palestine which backs President Abbas.

Following the signing of the new agreement, S&D president Gianni Pittella commented:

"The renewal of our partnership is now very timely. The common goal for the S&D Group and Fatah is the fulfilment of Palestinian national rights to establish a free and independent State of Palestine living side-by-side with Israel in peace and security. Our co-operation is based on shared values: democracy, justice, self-determination, respect for human rights and international law, as well as a just and lasting peace in the Middle East.

"Both the S&D Group and Fatah are fully convinced that Europe must play a decisive role in the peace process, contributing to stopping the endless spiral of violence in Palestine and Israel. Opposite extremes acting and reacting with ferocity wound not only innocent people but also hopes and efforts for a comprehensive peace deal.

"Continuing along this consistent line, the S&D Group will vote as one on a resolution asking for the recognition of the Palestinian state."
