Following the recent discovery of a mass grave in Kinshasa, the Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament is calling for an immediate independent investigation by the Congolese authorities.
Gianni Pittella, president of the S&D Group who is currently in the Democratic Republic of Congo, said:
“The discovery of this mass grave, I’m ashamed to say, coincided with our meeting with the Congolese government in Kinshasa. The Justice Minister assured us that he would be calling for an investigation into this matter.”
The president of the Subcommittee on Human Rights, Elena Valenciano, added:
“We demand an immediate independent investigation to shed light on this horrible affair.
“We call on Federica Mogherini, vice-president of the European Commission and high representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs, to monitor this inhuman episode closely and with technical resources, if necessary.”
