Following the terrorist attack on the French newspaper Charlie Hebdo today, the leader of the Socialist and Democrats Group at the European Parliament, Gianni Pittella, and the president of the French socialist delegation, Pervenche Berès, both declared:
"This terrorist attack against Charlie Hebdo is a despicable and vile crime.
"By attacking journalists, it is freedom of speech and democracy that have been targeted. Nothing can justify such a barbaric act.
"Our thoughts today are with the victims and their families."
