“The EU must step up efforts towards a lasting solution in Ukraine”, say S&D Euro MPs

S&D Euro MPs today called for the full access of independent investigators to the wreckage of the Malaysia Airlines plane that crashed in Ukraine. They also urged the EU to “step up efforts to achieve a peaceful solution to the Ukrainian crisis”.

S&D Group vice-president responsible for foreign affairs Knut Fleckenstein said:

"Whilst grieving over the sudden death of 298 innocent people and extending our sincere condolences to all families and friends of the victims, we urge for justice for the crime committed.

“We insist on an impartial international investigation into the crash. This process must be facilitated by the immediate announcement and implementation of a sustainable ceasefire and not obstructed in any way by the parties in conflict. It must be clear that whoever decides to obstruct the investigation will provide proof of guilt for this catastrophe and will face consequences.

“We express deepest concern for the further militarization of the conflict. The EU and the international community must draw more attention to the crisis in Ukraine and do their utmost to put an end to violence and the suffering of ordinary people."

S&D Group vice-president, Victor Boştinaru, added:

"The EU, through its High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, should step up its efforts to achieve a peaceful solution to the Ukrainian crisis. However, Russia, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, bears the major responsibility.

“Moscow must immediately stop the flow of heavy weaponry across its borders and cooperate for peace and prosperity in our common neighborhood."
