S&D MEPs today welcomed the European Court of Auditors (ECA) annual report for 2016, which showed a significant improvement in how EU money is spent.

Inés Ayala Sender MEP, S&D Group spokesperson for EU budget control, said:

“This report shows that we are moving in the right direction on EU spending. Over the last few years, we have seen a downward trend in the level of errors in EU expenditure. This year, for the first time in 23 years, the ECA has given the EU’s accounts a qualified opinion rather than an adverse one.  This shows that the improvements made in the last few years to enforce controls on spending are working. Going forward the main role of the ECA is to improve the internal control system of the EU institutions and member states. We fully support this aim but also want to look not just at how the system works but also at the final results to ensure money is spent as effectively as possible.”
