Quote of the week by Miriam Dalli, S&D Group vice-president

“The next COP25 in Madrid will mark a decisive turning point in the fight against climate change. With US President Donald Trump formally initiating the process to withdraw from the Paris Agreement, citizens in Europe and beyond are now turning to the EU for direction. Following Wednesday's vote in the EP’s environment committee on the COP25 resolution, the S&Ds will be tabling an amendment requesting the European Parliament to declare a climate emergency. The EU must act together and lead by example in international climate negotiations through concrete actions and measures.”

Upcoming events

Hearings of the remaining commissioners-designate of the next European Commission will be held next week. Following the scrutiny of the JURI Committee, they will then have to face our MEPs in their respective committees.

We are getting ready for the first plenary session of the month, in Brussels, with an agenda focused on freedoms, human rights and workers’ rights.

On Tuesday 12 November, MEPs will be hearing from European petitioners and accidental Americans who could be negatively affected by new “citizen-based taxation” in the US. Having never lived, worked or studied there, but born in the US, these EU citizens are being asked to pay US taxes or risk having their European bank accounts closed. The public hearing will be followed by a press conference featuring our MEP Jude Kirton-Darling and petitioners, in the European Parliament at 1pm.

On Wednesday, 13 November the Parliament will commemorate the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. To mark the occasion we have produced a video which you can find here, and we will also welcome former EP President Enrique Barón Crespo to our Group.

On Wednesday we'll also be highlighting children rights in light of the upcoming 30th anniversary of the Convention of the Rights of the Child.

On Thursday, the Parliament will be voting on a report on e-commerce and online sales of goods, as well as on a report to mobilise resources to aid Carrefour workers in Belgium, under threat of job loss due to the company’s economic situation.

Thursday is the day we’ll be voting on the resolution on the Polish government’s intention to criminalise sexual education of minors.

Here’s what Robert Biedron had to say about it during the last plenary session:

It’s not all plenary work for us, though. We are preparing the first event of the fall - a workshop on the ethical aspects of Artificial Intelligence.  Chaired by Tiemo Wölken, our coordinator of the Committee on Legal Affairs, the event will focus on the regulatory framework of these ethical aspects, as well as on the application of international law in civil and military use of AI. Interested? Register here.

And don’t forget to follow us throughout the week for all the updates!
