Quote of the week by Iratxe García, S&D Group president on the EU Recovery Plan

“Europe is aching for an ambitious European recovery plan to tackle the dire economic and social consequences of the COVID-19 outbreak. People and companies need a protective shield against the looming recession - a 1.5 trillion Euro European stimulus package. The Recovery Plan is Europe’s chance to rise to the challenge. We call on the Commission and European leaders to be bold and innovative.”

 

With the help of remote voting, S&D MEPs will be pushing for a New MFF, own resources and Recovery plan that focuses on responding to people’s needs and concerns during the COVID-19 crisis. 

Earlier this week, the S&D Group launched a Recovery Plan to tackle the immediate economic and social aftermath of the pandemic to lay the grounds for a sustainable common future of shared prosperity, well-being and resilience.

During the plenary, S&D Group will be shining a light on the emergency legislation in Hungary and its impact on the Rule of Law, because democracy and fundamental rights are essential to come of out the Covid-19 crisis strongerMEPs will also debate the use of contact tracing apps in the fight against the coronavirus and will discuss vaccines in the context of Covid-19.

Tourism is an important industry in all corners of Europe. The S&D Group will be closely following the Commission’s guidelines on tourism, on health and safety in the tourist sector and on lifting internal borders.

With the 3rd round of EU-UK future relationship negotiations starting on Monday 18 May, S&D MEPs will be following developments with the hope that good progress is made towards an agreement on the future partnership. 

Core activities of parliamentary committees and the S&D Group continue next week with a remote Group meeting for all S&D MEPs and a meeting of S&D Bureau members and Heads of delegations on Tuesday 12 May.

 

EUROPE DAY ONLINE EVENT - TONIGHT 18h TO 20h

Tonight at 18h, on the eve of the 70th anniversary of the Schuman declaration, S&D MEPs, EU leaders and S&D Commissioners will be talking about “A new beginning for Europe”.
