European cohesion policy: A key tool to make sustainable development become reality throughout EU’s regions
The European Union is currently discussing how to reform and update the cohesion policy, its main solidarity and investment instrument, for the period after 2021. The Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament and the PES Group in the Committee of the Regions are organising an event on Thursday to establish a roadmap to achieve a cohesion policy that will aim at improving the quality of life of all citizens wherever they live in Europe.
This reflection day will bring together EU-policy makers, regional and local authorities, civil society representatives, NGOs, experts and trade unions. Under the title “No territory and No people left behind”, they will deal within three workshops on issues linked to a just transition to a neutral-carbon economy; the empowerment of people, and the social convergence between and within territories.
The participants will adopt an appeal to promote a new cohesion policy model based on partnership between public authorities, civil society and local communities to promote a new development model aimed at reducing inequalities.
Among the speakers, there will be Columbia University professor Jeffrey D. Sachs; the mayor of Athens Giorgios Kaminis; the S&D Group leader Udo Bullmann; and the president of the European Committee of Regions, Karl-Heinz Lambertz.
