Quote of the week:
"Europe must regain its social soul and place people and the fight against inequalities at the heart of its political action, based on social standards that take us forward. We Social Democrats have the principles and the experience. Throughout our history, we have managed to combine idealism with effective measures to tackle inequality and injustice. Now is the moment to do it again!"
Iratxe García Pérez, on her election as Group president
With a newly elected President and Bureau, we are now getting ready for the first Plenary session in Strasbourg. From July 2 to 4 we will formally constitute the new EP and elect its new President. Follow us on Twitter for daily news.
After the failure of the European Council to agree on a suitable proposal for Commission's President, we will engage in new discussions with the aim to safeguard the spitzenkandidat process and find a candidate that will have the support in the European Parliament.
European citizens have voted in this year’s elections in numbers unprecedented in the past two decades, proving that Europe is much more than a project.
But in order for Europe to thrive, it needs the support of its citizens. This is why we have launched a call for an EU-wide consultation of people’s priorities on which the work and new mandate of the Socialists and Democrats’ Group in the European parliament should be based.
Therefore, we invite everyone who has an idea or an initiative to get in touch with us by adding a suggestion here. The ideas will be collected and submitted to the S&D Group’s bureau.
The European Parliament has for a long time been deeply worried about the situation in Turkey.
Following the presentation of the European Commission report on the situation in the country, which reflects last year’s developments, the European Parliament will send an ad-hoc democracy monitoring mission to Istanbul, Turkey from 24-25 June to observe the developments in the country. The S&D MEPs participating in the mission are AFET Turkey Rapporteur and S&D Group's new Vice-President Kati Piri and AFET MEP Ana Gomes.
