Quote of the week by S&D MEP Fred Matić, author of the report on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights:

“I am proud that the majority of our house recognises that in the 21st century we must no longer treat women as second-class citizens, but respect their feelings and freedoms, and make sure all women across Europe get the access to healthcare they deserve. Contrary to what the far right has said, I am not advocating abortion. What my report is saying is that every woman has the right to choose.

“But there is much more than abortion. We call for appropriate sex education for all children in primary and secondary schools, and for access to fertility treatment without discrimination, especially for single women and female same-sex couples.”

Next week

We’re getting ready for a two-day event, online and on site in Berlin, as progressive leaders join forces for the PES Conference: ‘With Courage. For Europe.’ in Berlin. Check out the full programme for June 25 - 26 here and follow the live streams on our website and on our Facebook page.

We are also expecting the conclusion of negotiations on the Common Agricultural Policy reform shortly. Our ambition - keeping the social dimension at the core of the reform and making sure that all agriculture in the EU is both sustainable and competitive.

Next week our Group will put forward its position paper on the New European Bauhaus. We expect the Commission president to follow up on her proposal from 14 October last year. Therefore, we will be officially approving a series of progressive guidelines that should be taken into account when implementing this project.

On Tuesday, the civil liberties, justice and home affairs committee will vote on a report from S&D MEP Petar Vitanov on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) by the police and judicial authorities. The S&D Group believes in putting people, and their rights and dignity, at the centre of how AI is developed and used. We want to make sure people can have complete trust when AI is used by public law enforcement bodies.

On Wednesday, we will be hosting an interesting webinar on Social platforms, Disinformation and Democracy. Our members in the INGE committee, Raphaël Glucksmann, Pierfrancesco Majorino, Christel Schaldemose, Andreas Schieder and Włodzimierz Cimoszewicz will be joined by our president, Iratxe García, and a series of special guests, including Helle Thorning-Schmidt, Sarah Andrew (AVAAZ) and European Commissioner Vera Jourova.

You’ll be able to follow the event live on our website.

Our members are getting ready for another plenary session in Strasbourg, to be held, of course, in a hybrid format. We’ll be holding our Group meetings to prepare for the debates and votes.
