“Europe without Schengen? Let's hear the Erasmus generations”. This is the appeal launched today by MEP Silvia Costa, Chairwoman of the Committee on Culture and Education at the European Parliament. “In Europe there is the proposal to restore internal borders. This would be a strike at the heart and at the idea itself of European Union – Ms Costa said -. I reaffirmed that yesterday during the opening of the meeting of the CULT Committee at the European Parliament: this prospect would be inconceivable for youth belonging to the second Erasmus generation, who have always lived in a Union without internal borders with the opportunity of a free area of education and citizenship”.

“I appeal to those governments – Ms Costa said – which are proposing the interruption of Schengen for two years: let the new generations speak. Ask them whether they could imagine a Europe with internal customs, a Europe which does not make them feeling European citizens anymore, which limits their possibility to work and study in another Member State, which reduces their opportunities of confronting and getting in touch without barriers with their fellows and with the rest of the world and which spreads mistrust and diffidence. Safety has not to be achieved in this way, but through a common management of external borders, a common migration policy and intercultural dialogue. As Chairwoman of the Committee on Culture and Education I intend to hear the voice of young Europeans and of their associations, starting with the European Youth Forum, and I invite them to reply with their own language through social media by telling what they think at the hashtags ‪#‎schengen #schengeniserasmus”.
