Quote of the week by Eider Gardiazabal, S&D Group spokesperson for budget

“What Charles Michel presented in July as a ‘negobox’, that includes own resources, is clearly insufficient. Our Group’s proposal is much more elaborate, and strategic, and would provide the EU with the better tools needed to cope with the effects of the pandemic, while ensuring that current projects are not overlooked. We urge the European Council to rethink its stance and think of the people!”

THIS WEEK

S&D MEPs had a busy return to parliamentary business with important votes in the budget committee where our Group supported proposals for new own resources for an ambitious EU budget needed to overcome the Covid-19 crisis. Negotiations on the long-term and recovery budget continue next week.

NEXT WEEK

Next week, MEPs in the environment committee will vote on the European Climate Law, where S&D MEP Jytte Guteland is leading the EU’s objective to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

There will also be important votes in the regional development committee on the React-EU package which will guarantee more funding for crisis response, resilience and recovery from the pandemic in the EU.

Group leader Iratxe García will take part in an exchange of views on the annual State of the Union with Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Thursday 10 September.

With a further round of EU-UK future relationship negotiations taking place next week in London, S&D MEPs will be following developments in the hope that progress can be made towards an agreement on the future partnership.

The S&D Group is also awaiting the nominations of a new Commissioner from the Irish government where President von der Leyen will have the opportunity live up to her promises and take the College one step closer to gender parity.

S&D MEPs will be preparing for the upcoming September plenary session with Bureau and Group meetings on 8 and 9 September in Brussels and remotely.
