Labour MEPs: Corbyn’s customs union plan contrasts with utter lack of clarity from Tories

Labour MEPs have welcomed Jeremy Corbyn’s announcement today that Labour backs remaining in a customs union with the EU, a clear plan that EU leaders will see contrasts with the utter lack of clarity from Theresa May and the Tories.

Richard Corbett MEP, Labour’s Leader in the European Parliament, said:

“EU leaders will see Jeremy Corbyn’s speech today on what Labour is looking for in the Brexit negotiations and contrast it with the utter lack of clarity coming from Theresa May and her ministers on Britain’s future relationship with the EU.

“While Theresa May continues to duck the big issues and fails to be straight with people about the difficult decisions that have to be taken, Jeremy Corbyn is showing leadership so desperately missing in the government.

“Unlike Theresa May, who is just managing her party’s divisions, Labour’s customs union plan will protect jobs and trade, maintain standards and rights, and will help ensure there is no hardening of the Irish border.

“As Jeremy Corbyn said today, Labour would seek a final deal that maintains the benefits of the single market and the customs union, with no new impediments to trade and no reduction in rights, standards and protections.”
