Public hearing on legal migration

On Monday, the EP justice and home affairs committee will hold a public hearing on Legal Migration in the EU. The S&D Group believe that safe and legal migration opportunities are a win-win for the EU. With new rules on migration, we can deal with labour market shortages in the EU and stop the illegal exploitation of migrant workers.

Hearing on the shipwreck tragedy in Italy

On Tuesday, the EP justice and home affairs will question representatives from the Italian Coast Guard, the EU’s border agency Frontex and NGOs about the shipwreck tragedy off the coast of Calabria that took the lives of dozens of men, women and children. In the wake of this tragedy, we demand full transparency over the communication between Frontex and the Italian authorities.

EU retail Investment Strategy

On Wednesday, the European Commission is finally set to propose an EU Retail Investment Strategy, which could be a good opportunity to ensure that financial markets work for the people. However, the proposal will most likely not include a full ban on non-transparent commissions to financial advisers who give counsel to small investors, also known as inducements. This would be a disappointment, warn the S&Ds who have long been urging a full ban on inducements as the only way to protect EU consumers when receiving investment advice. Our Group insists that the current biased system needs to be replaced by a transparent and upfront fee-based advice model.

New roadmap towards a social Europe

Next week, we are heading to Berlin and Porto to campaign with our new roadmap towards a social Europe, urging that social rights get the same priority as economic and environmental goals. The first stop is the congress of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) taking place in Berlin from 23 to 26 May. We will join forces with our trade union partners to raise awareness of the importance of the European Pillar of Social Rights as a shield against austerity. Another key topic will be the strengthening of collective bargaining in the process of transposing the new European law on adequate minimum wages into national legislations.

On 26 May, we are going to Porto, where we will attend the PES Social Summit, followed the next day by the Social Forum organised by the Portuguese government. Two years after the Porto Social Summit where we set key commitments and targets, we will return there to further strengthen our fight for a social future. In both Berlin and Porto, the S&D delegation will be led by our employment spokesperson Agnes Jongerius. The future of Europe will be social or there will be no more Europe as we know it and as we want it.
