Quote of the week by president Iratxe García, in her address to the young people at our #MChoiceMyVoice youth event in Brussels:

“The wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, the battle against climate change, the new digital age and the increase of inequalities. The global challenges we face have something in common: no country can fight them alone. And you – the youth – are responsible to rebel, commit and act to serve the common good and improve the lives of all our citizens.
You should question prejudices and injustices and those who proclaim that nothing can be changed because it has always been that way. Today, we would not have the free, united and prosperous EU in which we live, if our ancestors had not rebelled.
We stand against reactionary forces that refuse to accept all the progress achieved over the last decades. This is the real threat to our democracy and to the European project. On the 9th of June, the future of the European Union is at stake.”

Upcoming events

The S&D Bureau and heads of delegation are heading to Berlin for a high-level meeting, on 8 April 2024to meet with the SPD Bureau and government representatives. The aim of this external meeting ahead of the European elections is to discuss common priorities  for a more social and inclusive Europe  and common challenges, especially the sustainable and digital transformation and the rise of the far right both in Germany and at European level.

Upcoming activities

On Wednesday, 3 April, members of the committee on constitutional affairs will vote on mandatory harassment training in the European Parliament. S&D vice-president Gaby Bischoff is leading the changes to Parliament’s rules of procedure that will require all MEPs to follow mandatory training on the prevention of conflict and harassment in the workplace, as well as effective office management.

On 4 and 5 April, S&D vice-president Pedro Marques will participate in the event on housing in Portimao, organised by the European Committee of the Regions and the Party of European Socialists. With the housing crisis looming, the S&Ds have been calling for a European plan to ensure decent and affordable housing for all Europeans.
The availability and affordability of housing in European cities and regions has reached a critical juncture. Skyrocketing prices and limited affordable options have plunged urban areas into housing crises. Families struggle to find homes they can afford, and vulnerable populations face even greater challenges. The future of housing policy in Europe hangs in the balance. Follow the discussions on the topic and find out more details on the event here.

Save the Date – On Tuesday, 9 April, we will be assessing the impact of EU sanctions against Russia and their circumvention. EU Commission vice-president Valdis Dombrovskis will join our event, scheduled from 17:30 to 19:30.
