The Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament welcome the commitment of EU member states to push for a stronger global commitment to fight climate change when the world meets in Paris for the UN COP21 Climate Conference in December.

S&D spokesperson on climate, Matthias Groote MEP, said :

“Europe is facing an uphill struggle. Worldwide, we are already facing some 20 million refugees and there are more to come. A Study from Oxford University estimates that up to 200 million climate refugees will be on the move by 2050. We have to act together now. Consistency of action and strong policies are paramount.

“By further strengthening the Emissions Trading System (ETS) through the introduction of instruments like the backloading of allowances and the Market Stability Reserve, the European Parliament sent a clear message ahead of the COP21 climate negotiations in Paris

“The international community must act in Paris and agree on a global binding agreement."

The S&D Group is committed to contribute to the pre-COP 21 debate and will hold a discussion with young Europeans in Paris on 22 October (more information on the dedicated minisite).
