Quote of the week

Europe needs social democracy more than ever. Citizens expect us to draw inspiration from our original values in order to solve the current challenges and growing inequalities. We Social Democrats have a clear roadmap to transform the European Union and ensure its sustainability on three interrelated fronts: economic, social and environmental. And we have managed to include our main priorities in the working programme of the next European Commission.
S&D President, Iratxe García Pérez

Upcoming activities

Next week, S&D MEPs will be following the presentation of the new College of Commissioners where the S&D team of nominees will be announced together with their proposed portfolios and responsibilities. Stay tuned throughout the week and follow us on Twitter for news.

As well as regular business in next week’s Group meeting, S&D MEPs will be welcoming contributions from Luca Visentini, the Secretary General of the ETUC, Cristina Gallach, High Commissioner for the 2030 Agenda of Spain and Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, Former Prime Minister of Denmark and Co-Chair of the Independent Commission for Sustainable Equality.

Further afield, in the context of the extraordinary Climate Summit later in the month, our friends at the Foundation for European Progressive Studies (FEPS) are organising a side event in the framework of the UN General Assembly on Friday 20 September in New York. Find out more about the UNITED for Climate Justice event.

Throughout September and October, Think Pink, the breast cancer campaign, is organising the Race for the Cure in different cities in Europe. On Sunday 29 September, the S&D Group will be racing for the cure at Bois de la Cambre in Brussels. You can join the S&D Group in Brussels to show your support for the cause. If you’re feeling up to it, you can run 6km or walk 3km. And with Kids for the Cure, there is also something to tire out the little ones.

Last but not least - with a brand new Commission comes new ideas and policies. That’s why we have launched a call for an EU-wide consultation of people’s priorities on which the work and new mandate of the Socialists and Democrats Group in the European parliament should be based.

Everyone who has a proposal for the new Commission can get in touch with us by adding their idea here. The ideas will be collected and submitted to the S&D Group’s bureau.
