Quote of the week by Miriam Dalli, S&D vice-president responsible for the environment:

“There is no time left for political rhetoric. Now, with the 60% reduction in CO2 by 2030 approved, the European Parliament has proven it is serious and ready to negotiate with the EU Commission and member states to create a sustainable path together to eventually reach carbon neutrality by 2050.

“Climate change threats won't disappear on their own. Climate change threats won't be solved by individual actions taken by single member states. Only together, only by taking bold decisions, can we arrive at a situation where the European Union as a whole has net-zero greenhouse-gas emissions. The S&D Group has been at the forefront of pushing for a climate law for the past year. We were the first political group to come up with a very strong position to make sure that the EU could rely on an ambitious, progressive and realistic climate law where no one would feel left behind.”

THIS WEEK

Negotiations on the European Union’s next multi-annual budget, rule of law, the use of own resources and the recovery instrument continue this week, on Monday and Wednesday. S&D negotiators are aware of the urgency of reaching an agreement that will ensure a sufficient and efficient EU budget, while keeping in mind the rule of law conditionality.

S&D members are also preparing the next Plenary session, scheduled to take place October 19-22.

WHAT’S COMING UP

The S&D Group’s Africa Week is already in its fourth edition and is taking place in Brussels (and online) this week. Check out our site for the full schedule and get ready to listen to our guest speakers, among which you’ll find Nobel and Sakharov Prize laureate Dr Denis Mukwege, vice-president of the European Commission Frans Timmermans, EU high representative for foreign affairs Josep Borrell and our Group president, Iratxe García. Find the full programme here.

On Tuesday, 13 October, our members in the environment committee will cast their votes on the EU4Health programme. Our Group has fought hard to make sure it gets appropriate financing during the next financial exercise, one of 15 flagship programmes we have championed.

On Thursday, 15 October, our MEP Agnes Jongerius will present a report on the Social Europe in the European Parliament’s employment committee.

Also on Thursday, our Group President, Iratxe García will join PES leaders for the meeting that precedes this week’s European Summit. We will keep a close eye on the European Council, as the agenda features the EU budget and Brexit.

Stay updated on all our initiatives and reactions on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
