Swoboda on Croatian gay marriage referendum: "Choice between equality or discrimination"
On 1 December the Croatian people will vote on a constitutional amendment that could define marriage as a union between a man and a woman.
Hannes Swoboda, president of the Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament, said:
"After less than six months of EU membership, the Croatian people will choose this week whether they want to embrace progress and equality or whether they want to give in to discriminatory, backward policies.
"There is no reason to introduce a constitutional amendment on marriage other than to make it harder to pass LGBT-friendly legislation in the future. I hope the Croatian people will be true to their inclusive and tolerant nature and vote against this useless limitation."
