S&Ds welcome EU parliament's call for a democratic process in Egypt

The S and D Group deplores the conviction of the three Femen group activists

The European Parliament today expressed its deep concern on the situation in Egypt following the military intervention. Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament welcomed the resolution adopted calling for power to be transferred to democratically-elected civilian authorities as soon as possible.

S&D vice-president Véronique de Keyser said:

"We Socialists and Democrats call for an immediate end to all acts of violence, sexual assaults, virginity tests and other forms of degrading treatment against female protesters, women rights activists, and the LGBT community.

"We are hearing terrible news about events taking place in Tahrir and other places. Serious and impartial investigations must be conducted in all such cases, and those responsible brought to justice.

"We express our solidarity with all those Egyptians who cherish democratic aspirations. We have clearly and loudly called for a rapid return to the democratic process, including free and fair presidential and parliamentary elections. We expect to see a fully inclusive process with the participation of all democratic actors.

"There should be no way back in Egypt's democratic achievements."
